What is theism and are deists theists?
Theism is the worldview that an infinite, personal God created the universe and miraculously intervenes in it from time to time. God is both transcendent over the universe and immanent in it. The 3 biggest theistic religions are Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
Finite godism, deism and to some extent even the western panentheism, grew out of the theistic worldview. The central difference between finite godism and theism is the question of whether God is infinite or finite. Deism is primarily a theistic view minus supernatural intervention in the world. Panentheism modifies theism to posit a finite God with two poles, one being theoretical infinitude. It is sometimes called neoclassical theism.
There different kinds of theism, a helpful way of to distinguish among theist systems is to note the perspective from which each approaches God. There are rational theists Descartes and Gottfried, then there are existential theists such as Soren, then there are phenomenological theists such as Koestenbaum.
Theists can also be distinguished by what they believe about God and his relation to the world. Most theists believe the world is real but some believe the world is all in their minds. Most theists believe God is unchangeable but some believe God can and does change. Some theists believe the universe is eternal but most believe that the universe must be temporal. The most important difference among theists is that many believe there is only one God, this is called monotheists, such as Judaism and Islam. Others, notably bible believing Christians, believe in a Trinitarian form of monotheism which is God has three personhoods within one perfect monotheistic unity.
The leading defenders of classical theism were Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. The most popular exponent of theism in the twentieth century was C.S Lewis.
Those who hold a theistic worldview have a common core of beliefs. To this degree theist are consistent, their thoughts and actions are shaped from this core:
1. God exists beyond the universe and in the universe.
2. The world is not eternal and it came into existence.
3. Miracles are possible, that is God intervenes and supersedes the laws of nature from time to time
4. People are made in Gods image
5. There is a moral law
6. Rewards and punishment awaits.
