Viktor Frankl’s – Man’s Search For Meaning

The best book on the human condition must surely be Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, based in large part on his years in Nazi death camps as an inmate trained in psychiatry. An atheist of the humanistic tradition who grew up in an Orthodox Jewish environment, Frankl’s insights are unlike any other recorded in history.

Not even the Buddha can claim to have experienced the sheer absurdity of the Nazi death camp, and the days of torture Jesus Christ endured pale beside the years of humility and brutality encountered by Frankl. Bold statements, to be sure, but the experience of the death is truly unique in all human history.

Most interestingly, Frankl notes that it is the sheer absurdity of the inmates’ humility that helps to make the torture all the more unbearable. And in this suffering the good doctor has found for himself the meaning of life, which he shares with his readers in this seminal book.

Many are the first-hand accounts of life and death in these Nazi camps, but none have come from the perspective of a psychiatrist, one trained in the observation of the human condition. Frankl’s insights are all the more to be treasured and ruminated over because he speaks with the power of one who has been to hell and come back to tell us of heaven: Most touchingly of all, he has found his salvation despite suffering, and the book is his record of the anatomy of redemption.

Many startling uncanny events are retold that leave the reader with a sense of the mystery and majesty of life, even in abject suffering and humiliation, even in the face of senseless silence. For what Frankl ultimately confronts is the very necessity of meaning itself, that we humans as self-aware beings need to assign some purpose to our endeavors, particularly when under duress.
